INTRO TO BUSINESS

For this subject, I have learnt some basic knowledge on running a business. I also learnt presentation skills and preparing reports. My favourite topic for this module is "Management process". It is about how an organization is run. The 4 steps involved are planning, organizing, leading and controlling. I like this topic because it helps me understand how big companies are run which I hope to do so one day. My least favourite topic is "Ethics and Social Responsibility". It is about ethical measures and social responsibility of companies in the society. I find it abit boring because I could not relate to it much. In my opinion most companies only do "ethical things" to their own benefit. Hence, I think more examples should be given in the topic and probably involve us in some activities so we could relate to it more. Again, I would like to stress that I find the "Management process" topic more applicable in daily life because I understand the structure of an organization better now. It would definitely help me build a good organization structure when I am capable of opening my own architecture firm.

Business Plan

Our first project was to come up with a business plan report and slide. Our group decided to go with the idea of us as wedding consultants. Our company name is "Lace & Tie". We noticed that in Malaysia there are very few wedding consultants who provides a full package for their customers. Hence, we aimed to do so. We provide consultation on all aspects. Be it the wedding dress, catering, venue or even honeymoon destination. I have to admit that we were very engrossed in this project. We enjoyed it very much. Who knows? We might really set this business up in the future.

Charity Drive

This was our final project for business. We were assigned to get sponsors or external vendors to run a small business. The profits we earned will then be donated to a non-profit organization. I was elected as the leader. We decided to donate to WWF because they are one of the most reputable NGOs out there. To be honest, there was a lot of pressure I faced in this project. Finding sponsors was a major problem. It was two weeks away from the charity drive and we got no replies from any sponsors. Luckily, I sought help from my senior who introduced me to Taste Better. Our durian puffs were a major hit. It was sold-out every single day during charity drive. I sincerely thank everyone who helped out especially Nicole Lim, my group mates, Taste Better, Deliciously Chocolate, our faithful customers and Mr Joe. It was stressful but in the end of the day, it was one fulfilling achievement.
